This channel is focused on Great Lakes ship traffic videos, primarily recorded at Duluth, Superior, and Two Harbors in both daylight and nighttime settings. I attempt to show multiple angles of vessels with an emphasis on ambient sounds. No narration or music. Videos are generally uploaded on odd-numbered calendar days at 1:00pm CST. Details about each ship are provided in the video descriptions, along with information about their load and their journey (if available).
Mesabi Miner - Storm Catches Up With a Steel Giant
Here is the Mesabi Miner departing Duluth, Minnesota on the evening of June 4, 2024. She had just loaded approximately 68,000 tons of taconite pellets at the Canadian National dock in West Duluth and was outbound for Lake Superior. Her eventual destination was Indiana Harbor, Indiana. The video starts at Rice's Point, where the Mesabi Miner passes under the John A. Blatnik bridge. I then caught up with her again at Canal Park where she would pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge and make her way onto the lake. As she did so, she exchanged a captain's salute with the bridge... with perhaps the best sound I've ever heard from the Miner's horn!
The contrast between the weather at Rice's Point and Canal Park cannot be ignored here. I was hoping the Mesabi Miner would get out of Duluth before the rainstorm hit, but she and her crew weren't so lucky. They had delayed their departure to let other ships come into the harbor and were now paying the price for their courtesy. Fortunately, the rain lightened up somewhat for the Miner's passage through the shipping canal, but there was at least 4-5 hours more rain in store for Duluth that night.
As I captured the final shot of the video, a flash of lighting and the rumble of thunder overhead reminded me that I was standing next to a metal tripod while holding an umbrella. I made a hasty departure back to my car as soon as I hit the "off" button on my camera! The next hour was spent drying off in the hotel room, but I think the end results were worth getting a little wet.
In this video, you will also spot the Mesabi Miner's fleet mate Mark W. Barker in the background at Rice's Point. After unloading salt at Hallett 8 the day before, she took a delay at Fraser Shipyard in Superior, most likely getting a little bit of service or maintenance while she waited for the Canadian National dock to open up. So it's no coincidence that we see the Barker in the background while the Miner is departing. The Barker would end up backing all the way over to the dock. This was one instance where I wish I had two cameras and could have captured both ships making their moves.
The 1000-foot Mesabi Miner was launched on Valentine's Day in 1977 and made her first run in June of that year, loading iron ore in Superior, Wisconsin. Her cargo capacity 63,000 tons and she is powered by two Pielstick 16PC2-2V-400 single acting, 4 stroke cycle V-16 cylinder 8,000 b.h.p. (5,968 kW) turbo-charged diesel engines. Those engines drive two variable-pitch propellers, giving her a rated service speed of 15.5 mph. The Mesabi Miner is one of four 1000-footers operated by the Interlake Steamship Company (and one of thirteen 1000-footers on the Great Lakes). She is also the only 1000-footer in the Interlake fleet not named after a specific person, instead being named after the Mesabi iron range in northern Minnesota, which is a largest of four iron ore deposits in the region. The word "Mesabi" is derived from the Objibwe word Misaabe-wajiw, which means "giant mountain." The Mesabi range is 110 miles long, with deposits of ore ranging in thickness from 200 feet to 500 feet. There are seven open-pit mining operations in the Mesabi range.

Everything about this video is just great! Between the intro of the bow of the miner and the sterns of the Miner and Barker moving along with the rain at the canal. It all come together great. Awesome work!
Excellent video! Dramatic footage of this great ship...
You are so dedicated and appreciated ❤
The rain sounds relaxing (for viewers)! Glad you didn’t get electrocuted!
Thank you for braving the foul weather to bring us another fine video. Cheers!
A lot of rain in the upper Great Lakes region lately. I’m wondering if western Lake Superior is stained brown like a few years ago?
Man, that was beautiful. Those head on shots are really instructive. We all know how impressive the length is but the width of these monsters is very impressive too.
Another awesome video, thanks. Nasty bit of weather nicely captured -- rain, thunder, lightning and into all of this goes the Mesabi Miner with her approximate 68,000 tons of taconite. I love that you captured the pilot house with its lights shining brightly despite Mother Nature trying to steal the show.
That was excellent.
Great video! How many decibels is that horn I wonder?😳😳
Depends on how close you stand! 😉
It still amazes me as to how these captains can simply Man Handle these huge ships around, IE the pivot.
Appreciate your steady camera and that you just let it roll.
Thank you Jenny! 🙂
Atmospheric! Great video, The Miner's horn sounds like it may need a dose of sinus spray! (might just be the weather) Cheers.
I could use a dose myself! 🤧
@@1Long2Short 😃
I'm so happy and moved to see such a crowd turning out to see her back in, even at the late hour. That really shows how much the people there care about the ships, the crews, and the industry at large (hell, most of them probably know somebody who works on one of the ships). Like waiting for a family member to return after hearing they almost died. Also, on a fun note, I don't know if you noticed at the time (I only know because somebody else noticed), but while Manitoulin was en route to help offload, her listed destination on Marine Traffic was "WERE COMIN MICHI".
Yes, I noticed that! I even took a screenshot of it. 😄
@@1Long2Short Same here. An ore boater in a same Discord as me posted a screenshot, so I promptly got on MT myself to see if it still displayed. She had tied up at Thunder Bay by then, but her destination hadn't changed yet.

I don't care where you see them. In port, on the lakes, in a lock. Lakers are so graceful. Thanks for this fascinating video of the Hon James L Oberstar getting underway and departing the Duluth Superior harbor.
Thanks for watching!
What a trooper, filimg a bonafide "footer" in the rain. That will take a while.
Absolutely 💯 beautiful! Thanks 1 Long 2 Short for sharing!
Thank you! 😊
I motored my 38' sailboat past a ship like this in St Joe. To drop their lines they engaged bow thruster towards the pier. That wash threw my 17,000 lb boat sideways like a bath toy. And I was probably 50' away at the start.

The Mesabi Miner...neither rain nor shine can take away from the majesty of the Miner. And when she makes her turn into the Canal, you know she's in charge. My thanks to Capt Paul Berger, the Miner crew and Interlake for taking such good care of this beautiful ship. And to you for bringing such an atmospheric and detailed video of my favorite Laker.
Hi Ms. Carolyn! I’ve missed your comments. Hope you are doing well! The sound of the rain adds a certain amount of ambiance.

NICE!
You have brought a perfect showcase of the Mark W. Barker. The inclusion of a ride that even gives us a glimpse of Hallet 8 was grand. Thanks for your continued dedication and tireless efforts.
Thank you Carolyn! 🙂 Hope you have been well!
Such a beautiful ship, arguably the most beautiful on the great lakes. Thanks to the Captain for all the salutes!
3 Barkers (in Length order): The Mark W. Barker (639ft). The Kaye E. Barker (767ft). & The James R. Barker (1,004ft).
Beautiful piece. Now just wait and hope.
To me She is the "Flagship" of the Great Lakes. Be an honor to be part of her crew. You either feel ships or you don't
Captain sounded like he was finally exhaling on their safe arrival. I know we all were as well. Welcome back! You aretruly blessed!
Something about the Baby Barker I just like. She's a new ship, which harkens back to US shipbuilding. She can carry a wide range of cargo, which speaks to US industry and commerce. And she's designed to fit in the Cuyahoga, which speaks to me, having lived in Cleveland for a couple years and visited multiple times. The entire idea of this ship just makes me happy.
As you say, time will tell. We all want to see her repaired and safely sailing again, along with Cuyahoga, on whom I can't find any new info. Michie shouldn't have had to make this journey as the drydock in TBay was operating last season, but due to some political BS to try and buy votes in Quebec, Heddle Marine was shut out of Federal shipbuilding contracts and it's currently sitting idle with its tradesmen laid off. Great video 1L2S. ✌️✌️

It looks like the thrusters were in the dock ! I came to the description to find out if that was the case but they are in the boat it seems.

This is a wonderful ship, and it's very interesting to learn about the cargo hold...how cool that she has not one but two front-end loaders! These ships never cease to amaze me. Thank you for sharing this with us. I hope she had a safe journey.
Thank you Lisa! 😊 I was thinking about the two front-end loaders. I suppose they need one to work each side of the conveyor belt to keep the ship on an even keel. Would be fun to watch them at work!

I wonder if Mark has a brother named Bob? I can see it now: Interlake commissions a second River Class ship with plans to name it the Bob Barker. This, in turn, could lead to the new boat being nicknamed, "The Price is Right Ship." 😄

@1Long2Short Correctly guess the amount of taconite waiting for you at the CN dock, and get your ship loaded for free! 😆
Taconite Plinko anyone? 🤔

A great salute
Hi there. First, thanks so much for all your efforts following the ship all the way into the Fraser cut. I loved watching the pilot house spot piercing the night sky! The captain of the Manitoulin (Captain TJ) has a neat channel. Yesterday he responded to a comment I made by saying "Rand is bent on repair". Only time will tell what the final outcome will be for this gem of a classic laker. Thanks again for documenting as much of this journey as possible into Fraser.
Thank you Chuck! Yes, it sounds like repair is the plan. The only unknown is how much will be required to do it (and do it right). Hopefully the inspection yields positive results.
Hoping for the new beginning! Total respect & admiration for the Michipicoten & her crew (as well as the Helen H). They've been through a lot & I'm sure this trip (and uncertainty) is very hard on them. We've got some wonderful mariners sailing the lakes from both sides of the border & we see it when they come to the aid of others.
